DIFFUSION

DIffusion - what's that all about? Good question! Let's investigate by playing around with this wonderful, interactive thingy from our wonderful friends at PHET! It looks complicated, but don't be scared. It's all to do with particles bumping around and it occurs in gasses and liquids! Without it, we wouldn't have any smells. Which on some occasions might actually be a good thing!

THINGS TO TRY:

Here are some investigations. The words in bold are your independent variables.

  1. How does the rate of diffusion vary if you alter the temperature of one of the gasses?

  2. How does the mass of the particles affect the rate of diffusion? Design an experiment to investigate.

  3. How does the size (radius of the particles) affect the rate of diffusion?

Investigate each independent variable separately and write up your findings.

Remember to keep all the other variables the same for each investigation! Control variables in other words!

DIFFUSION ACTIVITY!

Diffusion in action! All you need are some "skittles", a suitable dish and a little bit of water and you can see diffusion in action! What's going on? Watch the video to find out! Can you explain it in your own words? Whatever is going on, its certain that is is a waste of skittles. So just share the video to your science geek friends instead. Save the skittles! You heard it here first.
